📖 Explanation: Negation in German (Negation)

Negation in German is mostly done with nicht (not) and kein (no/none/not any). The placement rules are important for correct meaning.

• nicht: Negates verbs, adjectives, adverbs, or the whole sentence. Position depends on what is negated.
• kein: Negates nouns (replaces ein/eine). Declines like ein-words (kein, keine, keinen, etc.).
• Other negatives: nie (never), niemand (nobody), nichts (nothing), nirgendwo (nowhere), etc. – these trigger no double negation (unlike English “don’t have nothing”).

Double negation is wrong in standard German (Ich habe nichts nicht gesehen → incorrect).

🔑 Rules and Tips

• No double negation: Ich habe nichts gesehen. (correct) ≠ Ich habe nicht nichts gesehen. (wrong).
• nicht position priority:
  1. End of sentence (whole sentence negation).
  2. Before negated element (object, adverb, etc.).
  3. Before infinitive/participle in compound tenses.
• kein for indefinite/uncountable nouns (kein Wasser, keine Milch).
• nicht + adjective = opposite (nicht groß = not big).
• Questions: Nicht wahr? or Oder? for tag questions.
• Common mistake: Wrong position (Ich nicht gehe wrong → Ich gehe nicht).
• In subordinate clauses: nicht usually before the verb at the end (weil ich nicht komme).

• Das stimmt nicht. (That’s not true.)
