Lokalpräpositionen (prepositions of place) tell you where something is, where to it’s going, or where from it’s coming. The case depends on the question: Wo? → Dativ, Wohin? → Akkusativ (for the two-way prepositions), Woher? → Dativ.
Wo, wohin, woher
| Question | Meaning | Prepositions | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wo? | where (position) | in, an, auf, bei … + Dativ | Ich bin im Büro. |
| Wohin? | where to (direction) | in, an, auf + Akkusativ · zu, nach + Dativ | Ich gehe ins Büro. |
| Woher? | where from (origin) | aus, von + Dativ | Ich komme aus dem Büro. |
The nine two-way prepositions
| Preposition | Meaning | Wo? (Dativ) | Wohin? (Akkusativ) |
|---|---|---|---|
| in | in, into | in der Küche | in die Küche |
| an | at, on (vertical), by | an der Wand | an die Wand |
| auf | on (horizontal) | auf dem Tisch | auf den Tisch |
| über | above, over | über dem Sofa | über das Sofa |
| unter | under | unter dem Bett | unter das Bett |
| vor | in front of | vor dem Haus | vor das Haus |
| hinter | behind | hinter der Tür | hinter die Tür |
| neben | next to | neben dem Fenster | neben das Fenster |
| zwischen | between | zwischen den Stühlen | zwischen die Stühle |
The test: is something moving towards a destination? Then Akkusativ. Is it simply located somewhere — even if it’s moving around inside that place? Then Dativ: Ich laufe im Park (I’m running around in the park).
Position verbs and movement verbs
German uses different verbs for being somewhere and putting something somewhere — and they go with different cases:
| Position (Wo? → Dativ) | Movement (Wohin? → Akkusativ) |
|---|---|
| liegen: Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. | legen: Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. |
| stehen: Die Flasche steht im Kühlschrank. | stellen: Ich stelle die Flasche in den Kühlschrank. |
| sitzen: Er sitzt auf dem Stuhl. | setzen: Er setzt sich auf den Stuhl. |
| hängen: Das Bild hängt an der Wand. | hängen: Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. |
More in legen vs. liegen, stellen vs. stehen.
in, an, auf, zu or nach? Going somewhere
| Destination | Wohin? | Wo? |

Nach Hause (going home) vs. zu Hause (at home) is one of the most common beginner errors — memorise both as fixed phrases.

- aus — out of an enclosed space or a country/city: Ich komme aus Italien. · Er kommt aus dem Haus.
- von — from a person, a surface, or a place you went zu: Ich komme vom Arzt. · Sie kommt von der Arbeit.
