W-Fragen

📖 Explanation: What are W-Questions (W-Fragen)?

W-questions are open-ended questions in German that begin with a “W” word. They cannot be answered with “yes” or “no” – instead, they require detailed information.

In W-questions, the verb comes in second position (V2): the W-word takes the first position, and the conjugated verb follows immediately.

W-questions are essential for conversations, interviews, and everyday communication. Master them early – they help you ask about people, places, things, time, reasons, and more!

🔑 Rules and Tips

  • Word order: W-word first → conjugated verb second → rest of the sentence (subject after verb if different). Example: Wo wohnst du? (Verb “wohnst” second.)
  • Wohin? and Woher? are compound words – very common for movement and origin.
  • Warum? can also be Wieso? or Weshalb? (synonyms, “weshalb” more formal).
  • Wie viel? (two words) for uncountable (money, water), Wie viele? for countable (books, people).
  • In spoken German: Add denn for emphasis (softener): Wo kommst du denn her? (Where do you come from, then?)
  • Prepositions often combine with W-words: Worauf wartest du? (What are you waiting for?) – “wo(r) + preposition”.
  • Common beginner mistake: Forgetting verb-second rule. Wrong: Wo du wohnst? → Correct: Wo wohnst du?

More examples in context:

  • Was studierst du? – Ich studiere Medizin. (What are you studying? – Medicine.)
  • Wann beginnt der Film? – Um 20 Uhr. (When does the movie start? – At 8 p.m.)
  • Welche Farbe magst du? – Blau! (Which color do you like? – Blue!)

Practice by asking and answering W-questions about your daily life – you’ll sound more fluent quickly!
