German has three “where” words: wo asks for a location (where is it?), wohin asks for a destination (where to?), and woher asks for an origin (where from?). English uses “where” for all three — German doesn’t.

The three questions

Wohin?direction — movement toWohin fährst du?Nach Berlin.

Which preposition in the answer?

The logic is always the same: Wo? → Dativ; Wohin? → Akkusativ (with two-way prepositions) or nach / zu; Woher? → aus / von + Dativ. Details: Lokalpräpositionen.

Wo or woher?

  • Wo bist du? — Where are you? (location)
  • Woher kommst du? — Where are you from? (origin)
  • Wo arbeitest du? — Where do you work?
  • Woher weißt du das? — How do you know that? (lit. from where)

Splitting wohin and woher

In speech, Germans often split them: Wo fährst du hin? = Wohin fährst du? · Wo kommst du her? = Woher kommst du? Both are correct. The hin / her idea (away from / towards the speaker) is explained in Lokaladverbien.
