Mir or Mich? How to Choose the Right German Pronoun

mich is accusative — the direct object: Er sieht mich. mir is dative — the indirect object, or after a dative verb or preposition: Er hilft mir. The same goes for dich (accusative) and dir (dative).

Only ich and du (and er) look different in the two cases. With wir and ihr you can’t go wrong.

Four ways to decide

1. Is it a dative verb?

A short list of verbs always takes the dative: helfen, danken, gefallen, gehören, antworten, glauben, folgen, gratulieren, schmecken, passen, fehlen.

  • Kannst du mir helfen? — Can you help me?
  • Das gefällt mir. — I like that.
  • Du fehlst mir. — I miss you.

Almost every other verb takes the accusative: Er liebt mich. Sie ruft mich an. Kennst du mich?

2. Are there two objects?

With giving verbs (geben, schenken, zeigen, schicken, erklären, bringen), the person receiving is dative and the thing is accusative:

  • Gib mir das Buch! — Give me the book!
  • Er zeigt mir die Stadt. — He shows me the city.
  • Ich schicke dir eine Nachricht. — I’ll send you a message.

3. Is there a preposition?

The preposition decides: für mich, ohne dich (accusative) but mit mir, bei dir, von mir, zu dir (dative). See dative prepositions and accusative prepositions.

4. Is it a reflexive verb with another object?

Reflexive pronouns follow the same logic. No other object → mich. Another accusative object (often a body part) → mir:

mich (no other object)mir (other object present)
Ich wasche mich.Ich wasche mir die Hände.
Ich ziehe mich an.Ich ziehe mir eine Jacke an.
Ich freue mich.Ich kaufe mir ein Eis.

More in accusative vs. dative reflexive verbs.

Feelings: always mir

Many expressions about how you feel use mir: Mir ist kalt. Mir ist schlecht. Mir geht es gut. Mir tut der Kopf weh. See Ich bin gut vs. Mir geht es gut.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know when to use mir or mich?

Use mich for the direct object and after accusative prepositions; use mir after dative verbs, dative prepositions, and for the receiver when there are two objects.

Is it “Ich liebe dich” or “Ich liebe dir”?

Ich liebe dich — lieben takes the accusative.

Is it “hilf mir” or “hilf mich”?

Hilf mir! — helfen is a dative verb.

Why is it “Ich wasche mir die Hände”?

Because die Hände is already the accusative object, so the reflexive pronoun moves to the dative.
